My Grandad Tom served in the Royal Navy on Motor torpedo boats but mostly on mine sweepers. On D Day he was on one of His Majesty’s mine sweepers clearing the lanes towards the landing beaches, something that could only be done immediately before the landings so as not to give away what was about to happen on the Normandy coast. So in the dark in at best choppy sea state three or four abreast cutting loose the tethered mines and I believe shooting them to dispose of them. Unsung heroes of DDay
