Dear Grandad, you were always such a quiet, gentle soul who would never have picked up a gun unless duty called, it did and you bravely crossed the channel on June 6th, landing at Gold beach with the Royal Artillery. We wanted to know your story but you wouldn’t talk about your experiences, only saying you didn’t do anything special or extraordinary, just one of the many that made that journey. You were wrong, you were a hero. Thank you
