My dad was a regular soldier having signed up at 16. He survived the hell of Dunkirk when so many sadly didn’t, witnessing a Stuka putting a bomb down the funnel of ship clearly marked with the Red Cross, men going mad , braking down and so many other horrors which no film could ever portray. He was mentioned in dispatches twice. He made it back to England safely and after a period of recuperation being very ill , became part of the D Day assault.
