Cliff on reaching 16 joined the Navy, probably before he should have done. He served on ships going to Iceland in convoy. Torpedoed 3 times he concluded it was dangerous, so when they asked for volunteers he did. Joining a new group which wore army uniforms and naval hats and insignia. They took him to Scotland and tried to drown him. On 12 May he reached his 18th birthday. On D Day he landed on Sword beach as a radio operator calling in/ directing bombardment from the ships in the bay.
