My dad joined RAF Regiment in 1942 instead of playing for Everton F C. Trained in Wick for D Day and brought Duke of Kent’s body down from his plane crash. It was his21st birthday on D Day and landed on beach on tank landing craft. He said he would rather be shot on beach than stay on craft in all the vomit and urine on it after two days. He was one of first into Belsen and Berlin. He played with many famous footballers to entertain troops in bomb damaged continental stadia.
