Our Dad was born in Belfast in 1919, and joined the Navy aged just 15, his widowed Mirger having to sign to allow him to join, he trained at HMS Ganges. His first ship was HMS Nelson, and he served on the Indominable and the Manchester, but his love was HMS Belfast. He was on the Artic Convoys on the Belfast when they were called to Scapa Flow, where they trained for the Normandy invasion. He was Petty Officer at this time. He was proud to have fired the first shots on DDay from the Belfast.
