Alan was a tank radio operator with the East Riding Yeomanry. He went ashore on Sword Beach just after 7am on 6th June 1944. His landing craft plowed through the broken remains of soldiers whose landing craft was blown apart by German fire. These memories and more haunted him for the rest of his life.
