D-Day 80 Memorial

This is a special place for you to share memories and photos of your loved ones who were involved in D-Day - and the wider war effort.

“…the spirit of the people, resolute, dedicated, burned like a bright flame, lit surely from those unseen fires which nothing can quench.”  King George VI, 6 June 1944 (D-Day)

Harry was Chief Petty Officer on board Landing Craft LCT 558. His ship was one of the first on Sword Beach at around 7am. He never spoke about his experiences for over 50 years until we persuaded him to collect his war pension and his medals. He suffered severe bouts of depression at what he had seen. He went back to Normandy several times before his death to pay tribute to his colleagues and friends he had lost.
